The Second Helvetic Confession | Section 1

Section 1 – Canonical Scripture

We believe and confess the canonical scriptures of the holy prophets and apostles of both testaments to be the true word of God, and to have sufficient authority of themselves, not of men. For God himself spoke to the fathers, prophets, apostles, and still speaks to us through the Holy Scriptures.

And in this holy scripture, the universal church of Christ has the most complete exposition of all that pertains to a saving faith, and also to the framing of a life acceptable to God; and in this respect it is expressly commanded by God that nothing be either added to or taken from the same.

About The Second Helvetic Confession:

It was written by Bullinger in 1562 and revised in 1564 as a private exercise. It came to the notice of Elector Palatine Frederick III, who had it translated into German and published. It was attractive to some Reformed leaders as a corrective to what they saw as the overly-Lutheran statements of the Strasbourg Consensus. An attempt was made in early 1566 to have all the churches of Switzerland sign the Second Helvetic Confession as a common statement of faith. It gained a favorable hold on the Swiss churches, who had found the First Confession too short and too Lutheran.

Evening Prayer | 9.25.22

Father,

We come to you this evening to magnify your greatness. For you have done a mighty work in all that you have accomplished. Lord, why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves up, and the rulers take counsel together, against you O Lord and against your people. You who sit enthroned in the heavens laugh; you hold them in derision. Lord, let us be wise in your eyes, let us heed your wisdom. Let us serve you with fear, let us rejoice with trembling. For blessed are all who take refuge in you. 1

Oh Lord, the world seems to rise against us, and many are saying there is no
salvation to be found in you. But you O Lord are a shield for us, a bulwark
against the enemies. Glory to you O Lord, for when we cry out to you, you hear us, and you answer us from your holy hill. When we lay down and sleep, and when we awake, you sustain us. We will not be afraid of the nations, who have come against us. Salvation indeed belongs to you O Lord, and your blessing is found on your people. 2

Lord Jesus, we praise you for your gentleness and your desire to dwell with
your people. You humbled yourself by taking on the form of a man. You
emptied yourself, you gave of yourself, that we would be reconciled back to
the Father through your humble death on the cross. We praise you, for you
have been highly exalted and have all authority in the universe, and are seated at the right hand of the Father. We look forward to the day when you will return, a time when every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that you are the Lord.3

Unquenchable Spirit, we praise you that you have chosen to dwell inside us
and sanctify us day after day. In your holy power and wisdom, refine us that
we may be whole. Refine us, that our hearts of stone would be replaced with
hearts of flesh. Give to us a willing spirit to sustain us and continue in this life.
Help us to make wise choices. Help us to strive for spreading the good news of our rescue.

(prayer requests if needed)

Father, Son, and Spirit, We worship you in Trinity and the Trinity in unity. We
do not blend your persons, and we do not divide your essence. For while you
are one God, you are three distinct persons, co-equal in glory and co-equal in majesty. You are uncreated, you are immeasurable, and you are eternal. We praise the holy name of our God, and we ask that you would guide us and accept our worship as a pleasing aroma in your sight. Keep us from sin this day and bring us back to worship you in a week’s time.

We pray this in the name Jesus Christ, Amen.

Pastoral Prayer | 9.25.22

Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

You are the author of all blessings we enjoy, of all we hope for, you have taught us that neither the experience of present evils, nor the remembrances of former sins, will or can affect a sinner’s heart. You have given us the ordinance of song as a means of grace. Fit us to bear our parts in that music ever new, which elect saints made perfect now, sing before your throne and before the lamb. We bless you for tempering every distress with joy, too much of the former might weigh us down, too much of the latter might puff us up, for you are wise to give us a taste of both.

We love you for giving us the clusters of grapes in the wilderness, and drops of heavenly wine that set in us a longing to have our fill. Apart from you, we would succumb to our sin, we would starve, and we would thirst, for you give all that we need. Let us continually grasp the promise that you have given, that you will never leave us, nor forsake us.

Lord when we are in the deserts of this life, when all seems dry and we are hungry, continue to provide for us in our needs. Lord when we are in the fiery furnace of this life, when we are weak or in pain, refine us so that the dross will be burned up and the Gold will remain.

Lord when we are in the battles of this life, and victory seems far from us, help us to remember that we are conquerors and co-heirs with Christ, and that the Battle belongs to the Lord before it has began.

Lord when we are in the harvest, when the fields are full of your providence and we have more in abundance, let us remember to thank you, because in every season of our life, you are the same, you are faithful, and you are Lord over all.

Give us faith, Father, help us to trust you in the midst of a broken world. Help us to see your truth in your word. And as your truth affects our lives, help us to affect the lives of others with the truth of your word. Lord while we may live in this world, we know where our citizenship lies. Give to us courage to live and work in this world while we wait for your Son to return or for you to call us home. Until that day Father, I pray that you would give us courage.

May we offer ourselves as a living sacrifice to you Oh Lord. Let us not be conformed to this world but let us be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

I thank you for the faithful saints of this church. I thank you that they come to hear your word. Lord bless these faithful saints. I pray for those who are sick and suffering in this congregation. I pray that you would heal them.

I pray for the youth of this congregation. This world seeks to entice them to sin. Let them hear your truth from the book of Proverbs, that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. I pray that you would guard them and raise up faithful men and women to mentor them. I pray for the elders and deacons of this church. I ask that you would give them wisdom and discernment to lead and serve faithfully.

Lord, you are good and your mercy endures forever. Your word testifies to your faithfulness in keeping your promises. Lord take our hearts and seal them for your courts above. You have given us much, and out of our abundance let us seek to find the lost and bring them into the fold. Gather us in and hold us forever.

Gather us in and make us your own. Gather us in, all peoples together. May the peace of Christ be among us. May we remember that it is because of Christ that we are reconciled to you. Give us to drink the wine of compassion and give us to eat the bread that is Christ, for Christ is the true bread and the true drink, and may we continue to prepare our hearts before we approach your table. And may we guard our steps as we approach a Holy God. Forgive us for our sins we pray, and hold us close to you.

We pray all this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Pastoral Prayer | 7.31.22

Lord of all,

We come to you this morning with hearts that are, for many of us, anxious and heavy over events in our lives, in our country, and in our world. You call us to be people of peace, people who pray for and work for your kingdom of peace to come.

Lord, the universe is yours, Day and night are yours, the changing of the seasons, the changing of the days, the passing of the hours, they all belong to you. Every single moment, whether sleeping or awake, is your creation. We don’t always thank you for the rough times and the hard times in our lives, even though we should.

Form us and fashion us, to be conformed to you and not to this world. Let us look to our circumstance and rejoice, for though the wrong is quite strong, you are the ruler yet! Rejoicing in pain and suffering is hard, but we are not of this world, we have a supreme joy that lives inside us.

Father, give us the courage to be gentle. Let us not react poorly to the things that happen to us, but let us respond in gentleness with the people who surround us. In this supreme joy and in this bold gentleness, let us find peace, that we would seek a peace that pass all of our understanding.

We set aside this day, O Lord, to remind us of the rest you took in your creation, to remind us of the resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ, and to teach us to rest as you rested. Let us shed the cares of these days and weeks, let us renew our strength as we approach this new week, that begins today.

Our souls are drawn out to you in longing desires for your presence. We long to go to the table where the feast is. We long to participate in the giving thanks that your son instituted before he was lifted up, for your glory. Give to us a desire to celebrate Christ’s death and resurrection each and every day, especially on this first day of the week.

Holy Spirt, we pray that you would remain in us. Enflame our hearts to worship you. Sustain us when the enemy seeks to ruin us. Remind us daily of the goodness of the Lord. Remind us daily of the day we were saved. Remind us daily of the bountiful mercy and grace that overwhelms us.

We now enter into a time of silent prayer, hear the prayers that rest on our hearts this morning, O God.

Silent Prayer

Almighty Father, oppose the oppressor and uphold the cause of the helpless. Defend our brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering now and who may well face persecution in the future. Raise up your people to live for you and not for themselves. Because of your gospel, you love righteousness and justice, and the earth is filled with your steadfast love. As you have loved us and as You love the world You made, be moving in it to bring true healing.

We pray all this in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirt, Amen.

Pastoral Prayer | 5.1.22

Here is my Pastoral Prayer for this coming Lord’s Day. It is inspired from “Christ Alone”, from the Valley of Vision.

Lord God, King over all the Universe,
Great is your goodness and great is your love. It was your plan and will from the beginning to make Christ glorious and beloved in heaven, where he is now ascended, where one day all the elect will behold his glory and love and glorify Him forever.

Lord, in your goodness, we see just how marvelous your plan was. Your plan to rescue the souls of man, in order to reconcile us back to you. We come to you humbly, as we have transgressed your law. We know where we have broken your law at just one place we know that it is a transgression of the whole law. In your mercy, forgive us. In your grace, restore us.

Remind us of the day that we were saved by you, the day you overwhelmed us with your perfect salvation. When we are filled with pride, remind us of how low we were when you found us. When we think we know better, show us just how little we know. When we think that we are living a perfect life, break us with just how mistaken we are. Lord rebuke us. Humble us. We seek to go our own way, call us back to you. And when we do not listen to your voice, and when we harden our hearts, reach out with your great staff, and wring us back to the fold. For though our hearts seek a moment of ruling over a little mud puddle, pull us by your great hand out of the muck and mire and cleanse us.

In this world you have given us a beginning we do not deserve, but we look forward to the day of perfection to come. Until that day, let us study your word and stand for discipline. Let us worship out of love for Christ and your works. Give to us your spirit, that we would continue on through this life.

Give to us strength to live after Christ’s example.

Give us strength to love those around us.

Give us strength to be gentle to those around us. Let the people around us see Christ through our actions.

(Section for the needs and requests of my congregation)

Father, we journey to your kingdom. We travel day by day, getting closer to your bountiful kingdom, where we will know true joy, true love, and true peace. Grant to us a willing spirit to sustain us for the journey ahead.

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Easter Prayer | 2022

This was my prayer this morning for my current church. It is based off of the prayer, “Victory”, from “The Valley of Vision”.

Great Father of us, you are the divine redeemer. Great was your goodness in undertaking our redemption. Great was the strength and humbleness of your Son, that he would become sin for us. Yes he became sin, who knew no sin, that through his death and resurrection he would put to death all our foes, including death itself.

Lord Jesus Christ, great was your strength in enduring the divine wrath and taking on our iniquities.

Great was your love, for taking the form of a lowly human, that every fear would vanish and every doubt be removed.

Great was your mercy, in ascending to heaven, in being crowned and enthroned in order to intercede for us.

Great was your wisdom in choosing this the means of our salvation.

Great was your grace, in commanding us to come hand in hand with you to the Father, for you opened the way. You knit us to the father eternally, so that now we know where our rest comes from, and we know where our peace comes from.

We glorify you this day, Lord Jesus Christ, for you gave us your Holy Spirit, that we would have a teacher and guide through this life.

Father, we know that we have sinned against you, and we know that we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We ask that you would forgive us this day. While we deserve the punishment due to us, you subjected that wrath to your Son. What a glorious day! According to your great grace, forgive us Lord. The dark curtain of this world has been rolled back, and because of your son’s work, your great glory shines upon your creation.

Father, I pray that you would bless all those who are here this day. Let your spirit rest upon those who have chosen to seek your face. Be with those who cannot be here with us this day. We know there are many who long to worship together with this family but are kept away due to sickness or other reasons.

Let us not forget that Victory belongs to you. And we thank you that we get to share in your rule and reign, now and forever more.

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

God Adopted Us?

Yes, those who are in Christ are adopted by God. Yes, it does matter that we understand this.

Question and Answer 34 of the Westminster Catechism: WHAT IS ADOPTION?
– Adoption is an act of God’s free grace, whereby we are received into the number, and have a right to all the privileges of the Sons of God.
(1 John 3:1, John 1:12, Romans 8:17, Eph 1:5)

It matters that we understand what Adoption by God truly means. When one renounces their sinful nature, puts their faith in Christ, and is joined to Christ’s church, they are adopted by God. The Father has mercy on us and extends to us a unbelievable amount of Grace that we do not deserve.

But it doesn’t end there. We are not just a child who is adopted and allowed to be a part of the family. We are a co-heir! A co-heir with Christ!! We are not just added to the family, we are now like the first born son in Bible Times, set to inherit everything. We are the ones to receive the inheritance from the Father.

Adoption by God matters because it means that we have something grand waiting for us; something we could never attain on our own.

We don’t deserve what we get, and we don’t get what we deserve.

We definitely don’t deserve Everlasting life with God in eternity, but through our Adoption, God give it to us.

Who – Am – I

My name is Ken. I am the author/creator of Coffee Time.

Coffee Time grew out of a different channel, “Joel and Ken In The Morning”. Two guys who are big fans of the show Community. We started doing our own show based on “Troy and Abed In the Morning”. This was during the time that Joel and I lived together and worked together for 4 or so years. We started doing them on youtube. We had some core followers but not that many. We didnt do videos to get likes or anything like that. We just liked making videos.

After Joel and I moved on to different jobs and places, the channel was dormant for some time. After getting permission from Joel, I re branded the channel as Coffee Time, where i talk about Coffee, Humor, and Christian living. That was 2015. Once again, I don’t do these videos to be famous, but to talk about things I like and maybe help to influence a few people for the better.

It’s 2019, and I’m starting a blog. I want to continue writing posts about things I care about.

My flaws:

  • I get heated about theology sometimes.
  • i don’t always capitalize “i” when i speak about myself.
  • I sometimes use contractions wrong
  • I am a sinner who is broken beyond belief.
  • I sometimes capitalize Random Words for no reason.
